The Importance of Regular Skin Examinations with a Dermatologist Near You

Dr. Gerald Peters, an esteemed dermatologist, owns, directs, and sees patients daily at his dermatology practice, Peters Dermatology Center in Bend, OR. Our doctor wants to stress the importance of regular skin examinations in our practice.

Our doctor is highly skilled in laser techniques and training. He is dedicated to teaching skin cancer prevention through regular checkups.

Stressing Regular Skin Examinations

Please know that skin cancer is one of the easiest cancers to diagnose and treat successfully if identified early and treatment starts as soon as possible.

Treatment depends on the form of cancer you have and what stage the cancer is in for the best possible results.

Identify skin cancer through yearly skin checkups with our dermatologist. If you have a history of skin cancer, you are at a higher risk, so we recommend skin checkups at least every six months.

Be Proactive Regarding Skin Examinations at Home

Peters Dermatology Center, in Bend, OR, explains that you must work in conjunction with your doctor to stay aware of possible skin cancer. You can do the following things at home to help yourself, and you should schedule an appointment immediately if you notice a suspicious spot.

  • Self-exam of your skin every time you shower or bathe.
  • Examine fingernails and toenails.
  • If you find suspicious skin spots that are worrisome, please point these out to our doctor.
  • Make a list of questions and concerns to present to our doctor.

Exam Day!

Wear loose hair, so our doctor can examine your scalp. Remove all clothing and apply a gown for examination. If you do not have any concerns about your private areas, you will likely leave your underwear on. Our doctor does not miss any areas of your body, from your scalp to between your toes and nails.

Our doctor examines your face and eyes, so forego makeup on skin examination day. He uses a magnifying device (dermatoscope) to look at suspicious spots better. A dermatoscope lets our doctor see the outer skin layers and layers just beneath the topmost layer.

If the doctor sees suspicious spots, he may biopsy the area (painless) and send it to the lab for analysis. Suppose the report comes back as cancer? The doctor talks to you about what stage and type of cancer you have and your most cost-effective, less invasive treatment options bringing you successful removal of skin cancer.
